A carbon footprint refers to the total amount of greenhouse gases (especially carbon dioxide - CO₂) directly or indirectly emitted into the atmosphere by individuals, companies, or countries. It is usually measured in tons and is one of the most important indicators of global warming and climate change. For food, this ratio is measured per 1 kg of production (kg CO₂e).
Beef has the highest emissions, while lentils and peas have the lowest carbon footprint (and are also stars of a sustainable diet due to their nutritional value) alternatives.
• Highest carbon footprint:
Beef, lamb, cheese
• Medium level:
Chicken, eggs, dairy products
• Lowest:
Legumes, vegetables, and grains.
In this sense, consuming less meat and dairy products is beneficial.
